As much as I always liked the 750T GMT and tried to buy a couple of examples over the years, the GMT hand, being a skeletonized take on the minute hand, was always a quirky choice. This is fully subjective, of course, and is likely why Doxa offers so many colors. The idea is to offer one spec that is more classic (with gold and red accents and brushed surfaces) alongside the more performance-minded and modern carbon. Such ubiquitous displays are great as they are simple, don't demand a ton of power, offer strong contrast, and display numbers quite nicely, but there's very little flexibility in how and what the display can render or how fine the details can be.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
With a MIPS display, not only do you get a better resolution as the display is made up of pixels (vs. segments), but you also only use battery power to update pixels that are actually changing. With a given mode locked in, you can cycle through various displays using the crown at two (using World Time as an example, that could be just the time in a second time zone, the time in two time zones next to each other with the date, or an expanded time/date display for a second time zone).
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"alignment":"interscrollerV2"},"type":"Block::Advertisement"},{"data":{"copy":"
From any passive setting (aka., when the screen is showing white text on a black background), the lower pusher at four enables the backlight for the screen. Sure, I would prefer something more like Indiglo, but this is entirely useful and makes the most out of an already very legible tiny display. Chronograph notwithstanding, I really found the UI to be largely agreeable and the U822 simply excels at being a travel watch, GMT/World Time features are nicely laid out and it's very easy to adjust the time in any time zone via the settings as needed. It wears accurately to those dimensions, which are about as large (certainly lug-to-lug) as I would prefer on my 7-inch wrist. The lugs slope downward to keep the watch balanced on your wrist, but it's a decent chunk of steel and not the sort of watch designed to slip under your cuff. I'll attempt to capture it in straightforward terms (if you're way into photography, this is certainly a simplification). The methodology is called the \"Sunny 16 Rule,\" and it functions as a sliding scale of shutter speed and aperture control (also called an F-Stop) based on the ISO rating of whatever film you're using on the camera. If the ISO is fixed (as it is when using film), then you have to adjust the aperture (how much light goes through the lens and into the camera) and shutter speed (how long the shutter is open to that light) depending on the ambient brightness of your environment.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"size":"fullbleed","images":["4c710206-785e-42f3-8fff-66e874b0bdc4"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"copy":"
The Obscura's design allows photographers to determine optimal shutter speeds by simply aligning their desired aperture on the bezel with the corresponding ISO indicators positioned at 12 and 6 o'clock on the rehaut. The rehaut goes from F/16 (a narrow aperture setting, where you're allowing very little light into the camera) all the way to F/1.4 (a very wide setting, in which much more light is going to hit the film). The darker the scene around you, the wider the aperture (and/or slower the shutter speed) must be to allow enough light in for a proper exposure. In street photography settings, this rule helps simplify the task of adjusting your exposure or slowing down the process by using an external light meter.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
The bezel of the Obscura is rooted in a bi-directional action that links the shutter speeds listed on the bezel with scales linked for both 100 ISO and 400 ISO, both with \"+1\" options to get 200 and 800, respectively. Nodus describes the following steps in a guide to using the bezel:
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
1. Turn the bezel clockwise until the white marker is pointing at your desired aperture.
\n\n
2. Now, look at the numbers on the bezel that are aligned with the ISO marker you selected in step 2 to see what shutter speed is recommended. A bit, yeah, welcome to exposure in film photography, especially when your camera doesn't have a built-in meter (or you don't trust it). Spin the bezel to F/8, and the ISO 100 marker at 12 shows 500 for the sunny shutter speed and 60 for the cloudy setting. Reciprocally, the ISO 400 marker (indicating more sensitive film) shows 2000 for sunny and 250 for cloudy. Adjacent to both, you can see the +1 settings and the indicated speeds. It looks like a lot, but you're literally just setting the bezel to account for your desired F-Stop and then reading coordinated shutter speed for exposure of ISOs of 100, 200, 400, and 800. How cool would it be…to be at a park, look through a scope, and together learn with your toddler how far exactly you are from that tree, way way over there? I've never looked through a rangefinder, but I just did on YouTube, and the Leica Limited Edition Pinmaster Pro II in limited edition grey was pretty rad. Anyway, enjoy the gift, Ben; I hope you find it spec-tacular.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"size":"inline","quote":"
Dave, you nailed it.
