Mercedes Gleitze was wearing a Rolex on a chain around her neck as she swam across the English Channel in 1927. It was as if she were setting a precedent with athlete partnerships—these watches were meant to be worn. However, in modern times, watches worn in sports were primarily centered around cars, where an athlete wearing a watch makes a negligible difference in added weight. Every gram counts when trying to be as streamlined as possible while running, playing in the Final at Roland Garros as Rafael Nadal does, on the final drive on the 18th during the U.S. Women's Open like Nelly Korda, both of whom also wear Richard Mille watches in competition. Even in cycling, when brands and athletes spend millions of dollars in wind tunnels, optimizing helmets and bicycle shapes for incremental aerodynamic improvements, why would Tadej Pogačar—the best cyclist on the planet—wear his signature Richard Mille in some of the most grueling cycling races in the world, including the Tour de France? Given this, I had one main question for Amanda—how do they get some of the top athletes in the world to agree to wear them in competition?
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
She said it simply comes down to having trust with their athletes and emphasized their authentic relationship: \"We're partners. In 2016, Wade van Niekerk also wore one when he broke the 400-meter world record. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce [a Jamaican sprinter widely considered one of the best of all time] is also Richard Mille's partner and wears them in competition.\" He also highlighted how this creates value for the brand: \"This is a way for a brand like Richard Mille to invest in a global sporting event when they're not the title sponsor of that event... Diamond League [a circuit of high-profile track meets] is Seiko, and the Olympics is Omega. These logos are plastered around the stadium, but people aren't looking at them. They're looking at the athletes.\"
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
As prices have soared for luxury timepieces, they have naturally become more precious possessions, which ironically contradicts their original purpose—watches designed to be worn in extreme circumstances (which was Rolex's entire marketing strategy for decades). It's fascinating that despite advanced technologies making wrist timekeeping during athletic performances unnecessary, elite athletes still choose to wear these watches during competition. Tennis players aren't checking their wrists mid-match, and sprinters certainly aren't timing their own races, yet the watches remain. Perhaps this speaks to the age-old tradition of wearing jewelry during competition—a psychological boost similar to armor. When you look good, you perform well. In today's highest levels of athletic competition, it's become particularly notable that when timepieces appear on athletes' wrists, they're often Richard Mille creations. What's brilliant about Richard Mille's approach is that while their watches offer no competitive advantage to athletes, they've revived that spirit of the watch as a companion to action rather than merely a display piece. It's pretty compelling to see fine watchmaking put to the test in elite competition, even if only symbolically.
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"size":"large","images":["027be357-185b-4232-8049-a46f6677354a"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"copy":"
Interestingly, the brand actively encourages this wear-and-tear approach. As Mille explained: \"Funny enough, most of the time, they're always really scared to scratch the watch and break them. And we're like, 'No, please, do it! Please enjoy it and get back to us with all the feedback as much as you can because they're made for that.'\"
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
What also sets Richard Mille apart is its approach to finding partners. Rather than simply going after established stars, Mille told me they prefer organic relationships: \"We love to be there at the beginning when no one knows these people. We also love to help this young crowd get a bit of freedom to work even harder to get to the top level.\" She cited Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc as an example: \"We started with him when he was doing karting. No one knew him. And when you see that today, it's Ferrari. It's way more authentic than just being able to put your watch on the most famous wrist. Everyone can do that, it doesn't make sense.\"
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"size":"fullbleed","images":["716c6898-9a06-4f29-8efe-c0ac1a71b495"]},"type":"Block::InlineImageContainer"},{"data":{"copy":"
When I asked Chavez about the seeming contradiction of wearing luxury watches during competitions, he offered an interesting perspective: \"You could see the argument for, does it weigh the person down? But then, these same athletes could be wearing multiple chains on the starting line. If you wanted to be as aerodynamic as possible, then everyone would shave their heads. In general, it's not as big of a trade-off in terms of time.\"
","dropcap":false},"type":"Block::BodyCopy"},{"data":{"copy":"
He also highlighted a crucial economic reality for track athletes: \"These athletes don't get paid to the level of Lewis Hamilton or Rafa Nadal. Every Olympic cycle, they're presented with these higher-level sponsorship opportunities that you just can't say no to.\" He even noted that sometimes \"the watch is the first thing across the finish line before their actual body\" in photo finishes.
